Hagerstown -- with attractions from Antietam National Battlefield to hiking and rafting -- also competes for shoppers with options from farmers markets to malls for antiques and contemporary fare. Hagerstown City Market, on Church Street and founded in 1871, is Maryland's oldest continuous farmers market, with area-grown fruits and vegetables, flowers, and crafts. Main Street's Hepburn Orchards Fruit Market, family-owned and doing things like grandma did, sells fruit, jams, jellies, and more than 30 kinds of fresh-baked pies, muffins, and cookies. Centre at Hagerstown, minutes from historic downtown, has 30 stores including Dick's Sporting Goods. Burhans Boulevard's Train Room and Museum retails toy trains and related items, while displaying old Lionel trains. On Potomac Street, Maggie's Hang-ups handles custom framing, Needy's Furniture Store stocks hand-crafted items, and One Two Kangaroo Toys and Books provides for small fry.

Hub City General Store, on North Burhans Boulevard, carries specialty teas, organic coffees, Italian gelato and one-of-a-kind gifts. Annapaca Farm's Alpaca Shop stocks fleece and yarn items from rugs to hats, coats, blankets, and alpaca teddy bears. Antiquities are plentiful in this historic area, with retail magnets including Antique Crossroads on National Pike; Beaver Creek Antique Market, also on National Pike with 150 dealers (look for the covered wagon out front); Cloak & Cupboard Antiques on Public Square; and Memory Lane Antiques & Flea Market on Dual Highway. Boonsboro's Auction Square Flea Market, on Old National Pike, deals in NASCAR collectibles, tools, and general merchandise. On Lehmans Mill Road, Lehmans Mill supplies furnishings, braided rugs, and gifts. On Valley Mall Road, the enclosed Valley Mall ranks as a super regional center with more than national and area specialty shops, food court, and a 16-screen theater. On Prime Outlets Boulevard, Prime Outlets of Hagerstown attracts value shoppers with more than 100 outlets, food court, and children's play area.
